Republic of Ireland's hopes of reaching Euro 2022 have been dealt a sizeable blow after Ukraine recorded a 4-0 victory over Greece in Group I of qualifying today.
Vera Pauw’s side were hoping for an upset in the fixture after a 1-0 defeat last week in Kyiv left them up against to it in the bid to progress to the finals.
That result last Friday, along with the 1-1 in Greece earlier in qualifying, looks set to cost Ireland.
Goals from Natiya Pantsulaya, Nadiia Kunina and Darya Kravets (2) gave Ukraine the victory in Athens and means Ireland must beat a powerful Germany side in their final game of qualifying in Dublin.
The only other hope of Ireland reaching the play-offs is Ukraine failing to record a victory in their last game.
However, that would be seen as extremely unlikely against a Montenegro team which has lost all seven games so far, conceding 26 goals in the process.
The final round of matches take place on 1 December.
