Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp admitted his side had "lost the plot" defensively as Aston Villa put seven goals past the Premier League champions in an astonishing 7-2 win at Villa Park.

A hat-trick from Ollie Watkins helped set the stage for the hosts, who also saw Jack Grealish (2), John McGinn and Ross Barkley get on the scoresheet in the shock result.

Klopp told Sky Sports he was disappointed by the Liverpool reaction after falling behind.

"All the things you should not do in a football match we did tonight," he lamented.

"The first goal had an impact but it shouldn't. We conceded goals like that in the past, but the reaction wasn't good, and we lost the plot."

Virgil van Dijk added that thoughts will turn to preventing a similar performance from occurring again.

"It's hard to lose the way we lost tonight. First and foremost well done to Aston Villa, we have to give them the credit they deserve. It was one of those performances where we weren't 100% at it from start to finish," said the Liverpool defender.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa manager Dean Smith lavished his players with praise for rising to the occasion impressively against the reigning league winners.

"When Jurgen Klopp says wow to you you know you've done something right," he said.

"The lads were superb, they executed the game plan perfectly."
