Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez has tested positive for coronavirus, the club have announced.

The 25-year-old Uruguay international underwent a test on Monday and is now self-isolating at home.

Atletico play their first La Liga match of the season against Granada on Sunday, with the Rojiblancos having had a delayed start to the campaign due their late involvement in last season's Champions League.

"Jose Maria Gimenez has tested positive for Covid-19 following tests carried out on our first team players, coaches and staff on Monday," said the club in a statement.

"The Uruguayan is isolating at home, following the health authorities' guidelines.

"Following the result, the La Liga protocol has been activated and our players will complete the next training session individually."

Atletico coach Diego Simeone tested positive for coronavirus earlier this month while players Angel Correa and Sime Vrsaljko returned positive tests ahead of the club's Champions League quarter-final against RB Leipzig in August.
