Graham Cummins has tonight confirmed his retirement as a professional footballer.

The 32 year-old's third spell with Cork City ended yesterday, and he announced his decision to call it a day on Twitter.

"I've come to a stage in my life where I had to think of a career besides being a footballer," he wrote.

Cummins also had two spells with Waterford, starting this season's League of Ireland campaign at the RSC before returning to Turners Cross in July.

He played this season in defence, although he spent the rest of his career, including spells at Preston, St Johnstone, and Shamrock Rovers, playing up front.

His final game for City came in the FAI Cup last month where he was sent off in their victory over Longford Town.

Manager Neale Fenn announced on Friday that the club and player had decided to go their separate ways.

"Graham obviously came back in the summer, but he has struggled with a few knocks and niggles," he told CorkCityFC.ie.

"We had a chat about it, and we've agreed that he will move on. We would like to thank Graham for his contribution while he was here, and wish him the best of luck for the future."
