Adam Idah will make his senior debut for the Republic of Ireland in Bulgaria tonight, while Shane Duffy will captain the side after Seamus Coleman was named on the bench for Stephen Kenny's first game in charge.

Idah starts up front, with Aaron Connolly and Callum O'Dowda expected to play on the wings and support the 19-year-old Norwich striker as part of a 4-3-3 formation.

New Spurs signing Matt Doherty displaces Coleman at right-back, while John Egan and Shane Duffy are the centre-halves and Enda Stevens has been named on the left of the Ireland defence.

James McCarthy, Conor Hourihane and Jeff Hendrick make up the midfield trio, with James McClean starting from the bench. McCarthy's last cap for Ireland came in a 3-1 win over Moldova in a World Cup qualifier in 2016.

Bulgaria coach Georgi Dermendzhiev has made wholesale changes to the side which beat the Czech Republic in their last Euro 2020 qualifier, with only keeper Georgi Georgiev, defenders Strahil Popov and Petar Zanev and midfielders Georgi Kostadinov and Kristiyan Malinov surviving.

Kick-off in the UEFA Nations League B clash in Sofia is at 7.45pm Irish time.

Ireland: Randolph; Doherty, Egan, Duffy, Stevens; Hendrick, McCarthy, Hourihane; Connolly, Idah, O'Dowda.
