Derry City have signed experienced winger Adam Hammill from Scunthorpe United, with manager Declan Devine stating that the impressive capture has been made possible by how Covid-19 has affected English football.

The 32-year-old has signed a contract for the next four months after a lengthy career in England and Scotland.

Hammill spent his youth career at Liverpool and it was from the Merseyside club that he first came to the attention of the City manager.

Hammill arrived at Dunfermline on loan in 2007 when Devine and now Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny were in charge at the club.

Since then, he has made substantial contributions at the likes of Barnsley, Wolves and Huddersfield Town.

Devine added: "I've known Adam for a long time and he’s a quality player who has had a wonderful career."

The Derry boss believes that the end of the lower league seasons in England, coupled with the uncertainty over contracts for the new campaigns, has allowed them to bring in the winger.

"To be fair, he’s the type of player we wouldn’t have been able to bring to this league had it not been for the pandemic affecting the leagues in England.

"He’s been here a few days now and is already helping to bring out the best in others around him.

"I’m delighted he’s at this club and I know that even though they can’t be in the stadium yet, our supporters will really enjoy watching him."
