The Board of the Football Association of Ireland has approved the format for the resumption of the League of Ireland on 31 July.

Described as a business-like meeting this evening the 11 Board members took 90 minutes to ratify the decision of the League of Ireland to return to play at the end of the month.

The issues surrounding the resumption of the SSE Airtricity League have been well documented.

In a shortened season the majority of Premier Division clubs objected to a potential promotion and relegation play off which could see two clubs go down if the status quo of the league was to be mainatained.

After much deliberation the Board backed the ruling of the National League Executive Committee as they at all times acted in accordance with the rules of the Association.

The team that finishes bottom of the Premier Division will be automatically relegated and the First Division champions will be promoted.

The team that finishes in ninth place in the top flight will play off against a team that finishes between second and fifth in the First Division.

Premier Division clubs are believed to be considering their options in the light of the decision and have 72 hours in which to lodge an appeal.
