Attempts to resume the 2019-2020 football season in Northern Ireland have ended in failure.

The Irish Premiership clubs needed to reach a unanimous decision on playing out the remaining games of their winter season after it was shut down due to Covid-19.

The Northern Ireland Football League board will now decide on how to conclude the season, according to the BBC.

A points-per-game system could be used, or to end the season based on 31 matches played.

The Irish Cup semi-finals are still expected to be played in July.

Talks had been centered around the distribution of European prize money to clubs, but an agreement could not be reached.

It comes as the League of Ireland clubs are set for a meeting with the FAI on Tuesday in which it is expected that the resumption of the 2020 season will move closer.

Relegation places and whether the FAI Cup is staged this year remain contentious issues, following the FAI making strides on financial issues last week, along with government support being announced.
