A total of 441 players, the bulk of them based in Europe, have applied for financial assistance under a scheme set up by world governing body FIFA.
The applications have been made to the FIFA Fund for Football Players (FFP), claiming unpaid wages from clubs.
Of those who applied, 89% were with clubs in Europe, with the remaining 11% in other parts of the world.
Players can apply until the end of June via world players' union FIFPRO.
FIFA has set aside $16m (over €14m) up to 2022. This includes $3m for 2020, plus a pot of $5m to reimburse players left out of pocket in the period between July 2015 and the end of June.
Closer to home, talks will continue this week between League of Ireland clubs and the FAI on a financial package to pay players.
However, some clubs have voiced concerns on the FAI's proposal.
