Ronnie Whelan says that the Premier League needs to come up with a way of finishing out the season, for the sake of deciding relegation and who might take European places.
The remaining fixtures were suspended last month with the Dubliner's former club Liverpool 25 points clear of their nearest challengers for the title, Manchester City, although the Reds have played a game more.
Things are tighter in the fight for Europe, with just 9 points separating Chelsea, who currently occupy the final Champions League place, and Crystal Palace, who are 11th.
A Europa League place is guaranteed for the club in seventh place after Man City were given a two-year European ban in February.
There are just 10 points between 12th-placed Everton and Bournemouth, who are in the relegation zone.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio 1's Sunday Sport Whelan said the games will have to be played.
"Relegation is so wide open, still," he told host Joanne Cantwell.
"Watford on 27 points in 17th position, Everton on 37 points in 12th position. There is a possibility that they can all be caught.
"Europe as well, Champions League positions. Even the likes of Wolves must have been delighted that they got so close. They've still got a great chance if all the games are played.
"Sheffield United, also. There’s another five or six teams that have a chance to get into Europe.
"So I think they’re the big issues. I don’t think Liverpool and the league title is the big issue, I do think it’s Europe and relegation.
"They’ve got to find a way to play them out."

The Dubliner claimed six English league titles in a 15 year spell on Merseyside, and was part of the last Liverpool team who claimed top flight honours in 1990, although he was injured for the decisive victory over QPR.
He would recover to take his place in the Republic of Ireland squad that went on to reach the quarter-finals of that summer's World Cup in Italy.
And while he says the gap between titles has been too long for Liverpool, he says there's no doubt that they've been the best club in England since last summer.
"The first time in 30 years Liverpool are going to win the league, and then with eight or nine games to go it gets cut short," he added.
"Liverpool supporters want to get it over and done with.
"Ideally I'd like to see all the games being played. I don't want someone to say that they're so far ahead, just give it to them.
"I don't want to see it that way. I want the games finished off. And (then) nobody will ever be able to say anything about it.
"Only Man City can catch them, and they've got to win all their games. Liverpool only need six points.
"It should be given to them if it happens (the season is not completed), but I don't want that.
"Let's give them it the way they deserve it, playing great football and winning most games."
