With the Irish public being urged to maintain social distancing and self-isolate if required, we are increasingly looking for movies to watch, books to read and rooms to clean.

RTÉ Sport is speaking to our sports stars and asking how they're using their time and tweaking their training routines to stay fit and healthy.

Today, it's the turn of Republic of Ireland striker Stephanie Roche.


What's the first thing you do in the morning? 

Wake up, scroll through my phone, get up and get some breakfast!

What's your favourite exercise?

Favourite exercise lately has been HIIT (high intensity interval training) sessions. Varies day to day. Also love getting out for cycles!

Is there one particular skill you practice every day? 

I try to get some touches on the football every day. Whether it be on my own against the wall in the garden, keepy-uppies or some work with my boyfriend, Dean.

Netflix and chill or a nice evening jog?

Netflix and chill! Maybe a walk in the evening some days, just to get out for some fresh air. But I usually try to get my runs or sessions done early in the day and have the evenings free to catch up on my series, currently on Peaky Blinders!

Name one book you want to read?

Richie Sadlier - Recovering. 

On a scale on 1 to 10, how good are your DIY skills?

10/10, or so I like to think anyway!!

Have you a favourite pre-training meal to help you through a tough session?

I don't have a particular favourite meal, just try to stock up on carbs with some protein. Usually a pasta and chicken dish. But it varies depending on how I’m feeling!

Name one movie you want to watch?

I was watching The Chase the other day and there was a question related to Scarface, which I’m slightly embarrassed to say I’ve never seen in full! So that’s definitely on the to watch list. 

What's the best way to stave off boredom?

We’ve started to have family quiz nights to help! I think just staying in touch with friends and family and making plans for when this is all over. I’ve had group video calls with my friends just to catch up and check in on each other, same with my nieces and nephews! All this around the training and working out, I’ve actually been quite busy!!

Have you any tips for training at home?

There’s so much that can be done from home. Just think outside the box, use school bags with books for weights or bottles full of water. Use the space you have to try practice your sport. I’ve started my own YouTube channel and have some sessions on there for anyone looking to practice football or get ideas for HIIT or circuit sessions!

Name one documentary you want to see.

I love a good documentary, I’m a big fan of the 30 for 30 documentaries and one I’m looking forward to seeing is The Last Dance which is due on Netflix soon!

Is there one piece of housework you can no longer avoid? 

Tidying up and organising my make up and cosmetics in my room. I've been looking at it for weeks and finally decided to start it last night, it’s still not finished. I have make-up and moisturisers all over the place. I don’t know why I started!!
