Shamrock Rovers have been approved to field a reserve team in the SSE Airtricity League First Division for the the 2020 season.
The Dublin club will compete under the title of Shamrock Rovers II in the second tier of Irish football with their first team competing in the Premier Division.
Despite some vocal opposition to the proposal in recent weeks, the FAI confirmed the inclusion of the Hoops in this year's competition.
"Shamrock Rovers II have been accepted into the SSE Airtricity League First Division for the 2020 season," read a statement from the FAI.
"The National League Executive Committee approved the proposal and the decision was ratified by the FAI Board."
The Hoops fielded a team called Shamrock Rovers B in the First Division back in 2014 and finished in sixth place in the table.
The First Division clubs met last night in advance of this decision but have yet to give their response.
