Former Waterford FC player and manager Johnny Matthews has died at the age of 73.
The Coventry native won a record seven League of Ireland titles between Waterford and Limerick during a distinguished career, which also saw him manage the South East club twice.
He also played for Longford, Cork United, Newcastlewest and Longford Town during a 22-year career.
Matthews' 156 goals make him the ninth highest goal scorer in the history of the League of Ireland.
Despite only joining Waterford on a six-week loan originally, in 1966, Matthews became steeped in Irish football - managing the Blues to a First Division title in 1980 during his second sting as manager.
After he finished playing and managing he stayed in the game via refereeing.
