SSE Airtricity League Premier Division champions Dundalk have extended league top-scorer Patrick Hoban's contract until the end of the 2021 season.

The 28-year-old striker is in his second spell at the club having rejoined ahead of the 2018 season following a three-year spell in the UK.

Galway native Hoban has scored a phenomenal 93 goals in 165 appearances for Lilywhites, including 32 in 2018.

The vice-captain finished top of the charts with 13 league goals this year after hitting 29 last season - his 76 total league goals for Dundalk are a club record.

Hoban, who initially played at Oriel Park in 2013-14, has won three league titles, two EA SPORTS Cups and an FAI Cup during his time at the club and ahead of the current campaign was appointed vice captain.

Hoban had pondered a return to England at the end of last season but now seems content to stay with the treble-chasers.

"I am absolutely delighted to get it done," Hoban told dundalkfc.com. "It has been a while but I am thrilled to get it over the line.

"I have had a very good four years at the club, I am closing in on 100 goals for the club and I hope to do that sooner rather than later. Hopefully the next two years will be the same as the last few and we can win all the trophies we can."

Dundalk FC Head Coach Vinny Perth said: It's great news. Pat is really important to us in terms of his character both on and off the pitch. He brings real leadership for us. The challenge for Pat is for him to continue to perform on the pitch, to continue to score goals and we have to set new targets for him."
