Tottenham teenager Troy Parrott is one of three new faces named in a provisional Ireland squad for next month's double-header with Switzerland and Bulgaria.

Spurs striker Parrott joins Nathan Collins - who became Stoke City's youngest ever captain this week - and Doncaster Rovers midfielder Kieran Sadlier in earning their first call-up to the senior squad.

There's also a place in the squad for Shamrock Rovers midfielder Jack Byrne. The 23-year-old has been called into Ireland squads before, but has yet to make his debut.

Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy returns to the squad for the first time under McCarthy and may make his first appearance since October 2016.

Seventeen-year-old Dubliner Parrott tweeted that the call-up was a "dream come true".

Ireland take on Switzerland in their Euro 2020 European Qualifier on September 5, followed by an international friendly against Bulgaria five days later.

McCarthy expects to see his squad trimmed down by injuries and withdrawals before the squad meets up and is expecting a testing encounter against the Swiss

"I don't know what's going to happen between now and the next couple of games. We've got Saturday games, Tuesday games, Saturday and then the Saturday before me meet up. Players could get injured before we meet up.

"With focus on the European qualifier against Switzerland, McCarthy expects a tough game against the UEFA Nations League semi-finalists.

"Switzerland are a good side. They have been in the higher echelons of the top teams in Europe for the last number of years."
