Derry city will still be wondering how they didn't defeat Premier Division bottom side UCD.

Declan Devine’s side missed a host of clear cut chances and also hit the woodwork on a few occasions, while the Students keeper Conor Kearns first-half stop to deny David Parkhosue early on, summed up the City youngster’s disappointing evening.

Derry should have broken the deadlock on 10 minutes but Parkhouse's close range strike was kept out by Kearns, after the City striker had latched onto Ciaron Harkin’s ball over the top.

Soon after City had two great chances, firstly Jamie McDonagh blazed wide with the goal at his mercy, then Darren McCauley failed to get a proper connection to McDonagh’s right wing cross, when well placed inside the six yard box.

On 25 minutes Collie O’Neill’s side went close to taking the lead totally against the run of play, but Jack Keaney’s 25 yard free-kick, which had Peter Cherrie beaten, whistled just over the bar.

The home side missed another golden chance on 39 minutes as McDonagh’s teasing right wing centre found Parkhouse, but the big striker headed over from four yards.

Derry, who were sluggish in the early stages of the second half, went close to finally taking the lead on 65 minutes as McDonagh’s pass would have found substitute Aidy Delap, but for Daniel Tobin’s late touch.

Minutes later Ciaran Coll was inches away from scoring, but the Derry left-back’s stinging drive flashed just past Kearns, left hand post.

The woodwork denied Derry on 71 minutes as McDonagh's cross was parried by Kearns onto the bar just as Parkhouse thought he was going to knock the ball into an open net.

Another McDonagh run and cross on 84 minutes picked out Parkhouse, but teenager’s header was straight at Kearns.

Deep into stoppage time Delap missed another clear cut opportunity, as Ally Gilchrist’s cross found Delap, but the young substitute headed wide from close range.

Right at the death McDonagh’s low cross flashed, just in front of Parkhouse and whistled past Kearns’ right hand post.

The result sees UCD move off the bottom of the Premier Division table from Finn Harps.
