An average audience of 224,400 tuned in to RTÉ 2 for yesterday's FIFA Women’s World Cup final as defending champions USA defeated Netherlands 2-0 to claim the crown for a fourth time.

The audience peaked at 265,400 as the game reached its climax, while a share of 31% of those watching TV at the time were engrossed in the big match.

The previous highest rated game at this World Cup was the USA’s semi-final win over England which averaged 220,000 - a 20% share - on RTÉ 2. That collision peaked at 316,000.

"The strong viewing figures indicate that RTÉ and TG4 coverage free-to-air was warmly received and has helped to create and accelerate a momentum behind women’s sport as seen with the Irish women’s hockey team last year and the Irish women’s rugby team during successful spells," said Group Head of RTÉ Sport Declan McBennett.

"The test now will be to carry this interest through the Euro 2021 qualifying campaign which will also be available free to air on RTÉ. Qualification for that tournament would further propel women’s soccer to an even higher level."

The Republic of Ireland’s Euro 2021 home qualifiers against Montenegro at Tallaght Stadium on Tuesday 3 September and Ukraine on Tuesday 8 October will both be live on RTÉ 2 and RTÉ Player.
