Kevin O'Connor will remain at Cork City for the rest of the Airtricity League Premier Division season after extending his loan deal from Preston North End.

The defender moved to Preston from Cork in July 2017. He joined Crewe Alexander last August on a loan deal that expired in January, and then arrived at Turner's Cross the following month.

John Caulfield, the man who brought him back to Cork, has since left the club but O'Connor is happy to stay on at the Leesiders for the second half of this campaign

"It was a decision I came to having thought long and hard about it over the break," he told the club's website.

"I am happy here, playing games and, since [interim boss] John Cotter has come in, I think our performances have upped; it is just a matter of getting more confidence back and more wins.

"I think we are in a false position and hopefully we can rectify that in the second half of the season."

Cork City will play either FC Progres Niederkorn or Cardiff MET in the first round of Europa League qualifying and if they come through that, they could face off against Rangers.

O'Connor admitted it's a tantalising prospect.

"Europe is always an attraction, getting to play in big games. I think we have got a good draw and, hopefully, we can turn it into an even better draw.

"Everyone has seen who awaits us in the second round if everything goes according to plan, but we can’t look past the first round."
