Luis Enrique has stepped down from his role as Spain head coach, the Spanish Football Federation has announced.

The 49-year-old has not coached La Roja since March due to a personal issue.

RFEF president Luis Rubiales announced at a press conference that Enrique had stepped down from his role and will be replaced by his assistant Roberto Moreno.

Moreno admitted that becoming Spain's new coach in such circumstances was "bittersweet" but he hoped to build on Enrique's good work.

"I want to thank you for the trust you place in me," the 41-year-old said.

"It's a bittersweet day. I didn't expect to be head coach this way.

"We're going to work hard to continue the high level of work that Luis started."
