UCD winger Neil Farrugia has been forced to pull out of Stephen Kenny's Republic of Ireland squad for the looming Toulon Tournament due to a hamstring injury.

Farrugia suffered the setback in the Students' 1-0 loss to Waterford at the RSC on Friday night.

It's a big blow for the player, who scored in Kenny's first game in charge back in March, a 3-0 Euro 2021 qualifier win against Luxembourg.

Reading's Josh Barrett has been called into squad in his place. Barrett last played for the Under-21s against Slovakia three years ago.

The Oxford-born winger has previously been capped at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-19 level and trained with the squad at Johnstown House Hotel on Tuesday.

Kenny's men fly out for the tournament on Saturday, ahead of their first match against China on Monday. They will also face Mexico and Bahrain.
