'We won't be getting carried away' - John Cotter

Cork City interim manager John Cotter says he has the ability to get Cork moving back up the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division table once more.

Cotter was only appointed to the position in mid-week, but the Rebel Army managed an impressive away victory against Bohs on Friday at Dalymount. Conor McCarthy got the only goal of the game in the first-half, finishing at the back post.

"I'm taking it as it comes," was Cotter's response to RTÉ Sport's Damien O'Meara, who had asked him if he was auditioning for the full-time job. "I enjoyed this win tonight. I've no doubt in my own ability, and that we can improve and move up the table. Hopefully we can build on tonight.

"We won't get carried away. UCD beat us not so long ago, so we know we'll be in for a tough game next week."

It had been a difficult period for the club. John Caulfield, who guided Cork to a league and cup double just over 18 months ago, departed after a poor start to the season.

The team had managed just three wins in their previous 14 games, to leave them languishing just above the relegation play-off place.

Cotter admits that it wasn't the best way to come into a game.

"It wasn't ideal preparation," he said. "I wouldn't be in this position now if it wasn't for John. So I've him to thank for everything, to be fair.

"Look, it was a great win. It was built on character and guts. And the players deserved that, the supporters deserved that, and the whole club deserved that after a difficult week."

The team has been criticised this season for their style of play, and Cotter says better performances will come. For now though, it's about trying to put a few results together.

"The players dug that out... an unbelievable three points to be honest. I thought we had a good shape, and we limited Bohs to very few chances. It wasn't pretty, and we know that.

"It was all about the win. We've had a difficult time of it, to be fair. The performances will come. At the moment it's just about results to build confidence."
