Shane Long has scored the fastest goal in Premier League history.

The Republic of Ireland and Southampton striker blocked down an attempted clearance from Watford defender Craig Cathcart and lifted the ball over Ben Foster to score after just 7.69 seconds.

Former Spurs defender Ledley King held the previous record mark of 9.82 seconds for his goal against Bradford in 2000.

The Saints eventually drew 1-1 after conceding a late equaliser at Vicarage Road but manager Ralph Hasenhuttl praised the Irishman's goal.

"It was fantastic," said the Austrian. "I think it was a very good signal after the Newcastle game on Saturday when I wasn't happy with the first half. They listened, especially Shane Long!

"Will the record be beaten? I think it's not so easy - if you shoot from the halfway line you could do it but it's not easy.

"We missed chances in the first half and were unlucky when we hit the post twice.

"In the second half the pressure was massive in the last 10 minutes. It was a pity they got the equaliser but for us it's more positive than negative because a point here is not easy."
