Pochettino: City are more talented but Spurs can beat them

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has labelled his side's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Manchester City as the biggest game of his managerial career.

Spurs were faced with arguably the toughest draw possible when they were paired with Pep Guardiola's side, who are still in the hunt for the quadruple this season.

They play the first of three matches in 11 days against City tonight in what is only the second game at their new stadium.

The Argentinian, who has overseen wins against Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund and draws against Juventus and Barcelona in this competition over the last two years, accepts that City are the better team.

Asked if this was the biggest moment of his career, he replied: "Yes, as a coach. Yes, it's going to be one of the most important games. For us, it's a bonus to have the opportunity to play in the quarter-finals with all the circumstances.

"We respect Manchester City a lot, we know very well it's going to be tough.

"It's so easy to play and prepare and the problem is after delivering.

"City have unbelievable players. It's going to be tough. We're playing in the quarter-finals and the big players, the big teams love to play this type of game.

"We need to be sure to match their motivation and desire. The thing we cannot match is talent inside the pitch.

"And then it's 11 v 11 players and we hope my team is going to be better than them.

"I know, and he (Guardiola) knows, we're brave, we like to go forward, be aggressive, be protagonists.

"The quality of the players on the pitch is going to put the victory on Guardiola's side but we're going to try to be protagonists and beat them."

Meanwhile, Guardiola has shot down talk of the quadruple once and for all - because he reckons Manchester City are actually chasing five trophies.

City, who already have the Carabao Cup in the bag, remain in the hunt for an unprecedented four-timer having reached the FA Cup final, sitting second in the Premier League and facing Tottenham in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Yet Guardiola, who has constantly played down talk of City achieving the quadruple, maintains his side have already won two trophies with three more still to play for.

"The Community Shield? Nobody counts it, that's the question, I would like an answer," he said. "The Community Shield maybe counts for last season, but last season when we went on holiday it wasn't there.

"In Spain and Germany it's important. We have won two titles this season and have three to play but everyone says one. Why play if it doesn't count? We could have longer holidays."

Guardiola insists Tottenham's new stadium will have no bearing on their first-leg showdown.

City will be the second visitors to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and the first in a European fixture.

Spurs have been energised by completing their long-awaited move into their new home and will bank on the feel-good factor continuing against City.

But Guardiola said: "It affects us if we think about the fans, but if we think about what we do on the pitch it doesn't affect us.

"The stadium is what it is, the supporters support the team more than ever in the Champions League.

"We know what we are going to face and it is up to us how we handle it. We have to know how to handle the situations, if we don't that's because we are not prepared to go through."

Sergio Aguero has handed Guardiola a massive fitness boost having returned to training ahead of the all-England clash, while Kyle Walker should also be available.
