EA Sports Cup holders Derry City cruised into the third round if this year's competition with a 3-0 defeat of Longford Town at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium on Tuesday night.

The hosts broke the deadlock 19 minutes in when Jamie McDonagh's cross from the right was nodded home by Junior Ogedi-Uzokwe. 

Seven minutes before the break thanks to a lovely effort form Eoghan Stokes who dropped the shoulder before bending a low strike .beyond Jack Menton.

Gerardo Bruna sealed it from close range in the 76th minute to send the Candystripes into the hat for the next round.

They'll be joined by UCD, who had to go to the well to get past Shelbourne in a dramatic 2-1 victory at Tolka Park.

First Division Shels got off to the perfect start when a Derek Prendergast header put them ahead just twp minutes in.

The Students rallied however, with Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Neil Farrugia coolly netting the leveller in the 29th minute.

In a very tight affair, extra-time looked nailed on but Timmy Molloy cracked home a fantastic strike to win it in the 90th minute and break Shels' hearts.
