One of Ireland's potential opponents tomorrow, Georgia's Jano Ananidze, came to Fabian Schaer's aid when the Swiss defender was knocked out during their countries' clash in Tbilisi at the weekend.

Newcastle defender Schaer accidentally clashed heads with Jemal Tabidze in the 24th minute of Switzerland's 2-0 win and was unconscious on the ground.

Fearing the Swiss player had swallowed his tongue, Spartak Moscow midfielder Ananidze, tried to clear Schaer's airway with his fingers.

Astonishingly, Schaer played the rest of the game after receiving attention from Switzerland's medical team.

"It looks awful. I can't remember anything," Schaer told Swiss newspaper Blick after watching video of the incident.

"I was out for a few seconds. My skull is still humming. And I've got neck ache and a bruise on my forehead. But it was worth it."

Tabidze required bandaging for a head wound but he too continued to play on.
