Mick McCarthy has heaped praise on Jack Byrne after calling the Shamrock Rovers midfielder into the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming European qualifiers.

The Ireland boss says Byrne produced "a real masterclass" after watching him play in his side's 3-0 win over Sligo Rovers on Friday night.

Byrne comes in as a replacement for the injured Callum O'Dowda, who has been ruled out with a knee injury after flying into Dublin to be assessed by FAI medical staff.

He joins Ronan Curtis and Alan Browne as players forced to withdraw from the original squad with injury, Kevin Long, Josh Cullen and now Byrne selected in their place.

Ireland manager Mick McCarthy was in the crowd at Tallaght Stadium to watch Byrne put in a Man of the Match display over the weekend, and was impressed with what he saw.

"I'm hoping he can produce that passing range that he had on Friday night," said McCarthy at the 3 FAI International Awards.

"The goal he scored was magnificent, you can never have enough of those things.

"It's a different standard I know that [but] he produced a real masterclass, his passing range and all round play on that night was excellent so that's the benefit of going to watch games.

"We've been getting round trying to watch the games in the League of Ireland and he's got the reward of being in the squad now for playing so well."

The 22-year old crowned his display with a superb goal late in the second half.

Goalkeeper Keiren Westwood, defender Richard Keogh and midfielder Conor Hourihane will miss training on Monday due to being afforded extra time before reporting in but all are expected to feature on Tuesday.
