Republic of Ireland and Portsmouth striker Ronan Curtis may miss the Euro qualifiers against Gibraltar and Georgia after a freak accident resulted in him requiring surgery on his finger.

Curtis didn't feature in Portsmouth's 3-2 win away to Walsall in League One last night and manager Kenny Jackett confirmed that Curtis had suffered from a freak accident.

The former Derry City striker was leaving his home before joining up with the team when a gust of wind slammed the front door shut on one of his fingers.

"Ronan trapped his finger in the door, it’s quite serious and needed surgery to stitch it back on," Jackett told Portsmouth.co.uk.

"It happened at home. It was windy down in Portsmouth and the wind caught the door as he was leaving his house to meet up with us.

"According to his mum, the top of the finger was hanging off and they sewed it back on with plastic surgery. It was 9am when I got the call, just when we were ready to leave, although he was okay by this afternoon.

"How long he’ll be out for is a really difficult one to say. I will be surprised if he plays on Saturday, very surprised, beyond that it’s hard to call."

Curtis was named as part of the 38-man provisional squad for the March qualifiers but he appears unlikely to make the cut now when Mick McCarthy trims his squad to 23 ahead of this weekend's FAI International Awards.
