Defeat to Gunners 'was maybe backlash from Wednesday': Solskjaer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suspects that his first defeat as Man United caretaker manager could be linked to a European hangover following their exertions in Paris during the week.

Arsenal handed United their first league defeat since December at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, with the goals coming from Granit Xhak in the first half and a 68th minute Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang penalty.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the 2-0 defeat, Solskjaer admitted that the Champions League win over PSG may have been a factor, but added that Xhaka's goal in the 11th minute was also key.

"We started slowly," he said.

"It was maybe backlash from Wednesday night. We created chances, that's the thing. When they got the first goal, that's a different game.

"I thought we created some great, great chances and we just didn't take them. I know more than anyone that you can miss chances. It was one of those days where you have to dust yourselves down from and have a good reaction."

"We were too slow in the first 15 minutes to get up to them. In the first 15 to 20 minutes we never put them under pressure and he had time to hit that ball.

On whether De Gea should have done better with Xhaka's effort, Solskjaer said: "The ball moves so strange and when you see it on telly, it's on of them where it looks like it goes to David's left and then just changes direction."

As for Arsenal's spot-kick, Solskjaer added:

"I think the referee will be disappointed when he sees it because I don't think it's a penalty after seeing it on telly."
