Newport County goalkeeper Joe Day swiftly left the pitch following his side's brilliant FA Cup victory over Middlesbrough amid reports his wife went into labour during the game.

A post on the FA Cup's official Twitter account read: "@NewportCounty goalkeeper Joe Day's wife has been close to giving birth to twins for days.

"Tonight, she went into labour during The Exiles' 2-0 win over @Boro.

"At the FT whistle, Joe raced straight down the tunnel to be with his wife.

"Good luck Joe and family!" 

Day was flawless throughout a famous win for the League Two side at Rodney Parade. Goals from Padraig Amond and Robbie Willmott earned a deserved 2-0 win that set up a fifth-round tie against Manchester City. 

Exiles boss Michael Flynn estimated that Newport will make £1m from this cup run, with more TV money against City to come.
