Rice bowled over after getting taste for goals

Declan Rice: "To get the three points, to beat Arsenal and for me to score is unbelievable."

Declan Rice was pinching himself after his excellent goal sank Arsenal on Saturday, and vowed to start backing himself in front of goal more often.

Rice revealed how his West Ham team-mates have been urging him to take more shots after he finally opened his account against the Gunners.

The midfielder, who turns 20 on Monday and remains in the middle of a tug of war between England and the Republic of Ireland for his international services, grabbed his first career goal on his 55th appearance for the Hammers.

It was a vital strike, too, tucking away Samir Nasri's lay-off three minutes after half-time to secure a 1-0 win in front of a record crowd of 59,946 at the London Stadium.

"I can't put it into words," Rice told the club's website. "I think you could see on my face how much it meant to me.

"And the way the team celebrated, how much it meant to them for me to score as well, as they've all been on at me to score and start shooting more.

"To get the three points, to beat Arsenal and for me to score is unbelievable.

"Samir set it back and I knew I was in the box but I didn't really know where the goal was because I was stood side-on. It was a clean strike, a clean connection and there were a lot of bodies in the way and it went right into the top corner.

"You could see from the celebration I probably didn't know what to do, but I'm delighted!"

Michail Antonio (l) with Rice

Meanwhile, team-mate Michail Antonio has been talking up Rice and revealed they have spoken about his international future.

Rice has three caps from friendly games for the Boys in Green but opted out of recent squads for Nations League games that would have ruled out the 19-year-old representing his native country.

Antonio told Goals on Sunday: "It’s a difficult situation. I can’t put myself in his shoes.

"I’ve spoken to him about it. He’s got a bit of loyalty to Ireland because obviously he’s played for the younger ranks and that’s what...so he’s got that bit of loyalty to them but then when England come knocking it’s hard to ignore.

"I think he’s taking his time and thinking about the situation.

"I believe it doesn’t matter whoever he picks he’s going to be playing for either team."

He added: "I don’t think there are many people better than him in that defensive holding position.

I say holding midfield is his best position because he just breaks everything up. The full-back goes up, he’s able to go out wide to deal with it. He can play right-back.

"Do you know who he reminds me of? [N’Golo] Kante, [Claude] Makélélé, those type people.

"I see him up there are those type of players because he completely breaks things up and gets the team ticking, keeps it moving and every now and then hopefully he can pop up with some goals."

For Arsenal it was a fifth defeat of the season which dented their top-four aspirations, and they have won just four of their 11 matches on the road this season.

But captain Laurent Koscielny told the club website: "We don't think about that. We take it game after game.

"We worked well during the week to prepare and we had the ambition to get the three points. But in football you don't know, you have your opponent and I think they played well with quality.

"We need to keep our confidence and continue to work together, and the results will come."
