Dundalk midfielder Stephen O’Donnell is set to announce his retirement from playing and will then join the Lilywhites’ backroom team.

The six-time Premier Division title-winner, who has played in two Europa League group stage campaigns, suffered a broken leg last May but it was hoped he would return for the upcoming season.

The 32-year-old has been one of the outstanding players in the country and found his best form under Stephen Kenny as he became an inspirational figure at Oriel Park.

It is expected his retirement will be confirmed later in the week and details of where he fits into new boss Vinny Perth’s staff will then become clearer.
