Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino said he is "sad" for his friend Jose Mourinho, but refused to be drawn on rumours that he could be the next Manchester United manager.

The Argentinean is one of the front-runners to succeed Mourinho after he parted company with the club today, and offered his best wishes to the departed manager.

"First of all I want to send my best wishes to him. I feel so sorry," he told a press conference to preview Spurs' Carabao Cup tie at Arsenal tomorrow.

"I have a very good relationship with Jose, he is a good friend, it is sad news. It is not my business what has happened in another club. I send my best wishes to Jose.

"After nearly five years there is a lot of rumours about my position as manager at Tottenham.

"I cannot answer this type of question because rumours happen."

Former Manchester United player Gary Neville believes the Spurs boss is the "ideal candidate" for the role, while former Republic of Ireland international Kenny Cunningham says the ex-Southampton man "ticks all the boxes".
