Former Dundalk striker David McMillan believes Vinny Perth is the right man to take over from Stephen Kenny, despite the Lilywhites No 2 not having the required pro license.
Perth has served as Kenny's assistant at Oriel Park since his appointment six years ago, playing a key role in an unprecedented period of success.
The club would need special dispensation from the FAI to appoint Perth, but McMillan - who left for St Johnstone a year ago - is backing the 42-year-old to keep double winners Dundalk on the rise.
"I think with that group in Dundalk they'll be prepared for anything," he told RTÉ 2fm's Game On when reflecting on Kenny's departure.
"Personally I'd like to see Vinny get the job. Obviously he does have the issue with the pro license but if I was involved with the club I'd be trying to appoint in-house and because it's such a tight-knit group, the guys would love working with Vinny.
"It'll be full steam ahead for the team. Whoever is appointed will have a very strong squad and hopefully they'll have another successful year next year."
McMillan enjoyed some incredible nights with Kenny at Dundalk. He shone in their memorable European run in 2016 and had a happy knack of scoring crucial goals.
The 29-year-old said his old manager will get the very best out of Ireland's Under-21s, who'll benefit from his desire to see players express themselves.
"I think it really does suit him. Throughout his career he's had a reputation for enhancing a lot of young players.
"He'll get them playing their best stuff. Certainly at Dundalk that's been the case. The likes of Patrick McEleney, Michael Duffy this season, and in seasons past, have done so well because he gives them that opportunity to flourish.
"Stephen does have that wealth of knowledge. He'll go and watch games, he knows every player in the league inside out... and hopefully he has the ability to get he best out of these players."
