FAI confirm Martin O'Neill as the replacement for Giovanni Trapattoni, with former captain Roy Keane as his assistant. The pair signed an initial two-year deal, which was part-funded by businessman Denis O'Brien.

Robbie Keane scores his 62nd goal as O'Neill made a winning start as Republic of Ireland manager with goals from Aiden McGeady and Shane Long securing a 3-0 victory over Latvia at the Aviva Stadium.

Arguably the highlight of O'Neill's five-year reign came with Shane Long's thunderous strike against the reigning world champions in Dublin. Ultimately defeat in Poland three days later condemned Ireland to the Euro 2016 play-offs, but this win will be long remembered.

A rare Robbie Brady header secured Ireland's place in the last 16 of the European Championships after a nervy, memorable win over a weakened Italy in Lille. Ireland's campaign would end in their next match in Lyon, despite Brady giving hosts France a first half fright.

A James McClean strike against Austria in the Ernst-Happel Stadium left Ireland with three wins and a draw from their first four 2018 World Cup qualifiers, but four games without a win left our hopes hanging by a thread. McClean again came up with the goods against Wales in Cardiff to secure another play-off berth.

A promising 0-0 draw in Copenhagen inspired confidence that Ireland could reach a first World Cup since 1994 but hopes were brutally shattered as a Christian Eriksen inspired Denmark reacted to going 1-0 behind by hitting five goals without reply. O'Neill's half-time substitutions were questioned by pundits and the Denmark manager.

After a month of being linked with vacant jobs at Stoke and Everton, Martin O'Neill gives his first interview since signing a new two-year deal with the FAI.  

 

19 November 2018

An insipid Nations League campaign ends with a 0-0 draw in Aargus. O'Neill's team won one game in 2018 and have been relegated to Nations League C, meaning a third seeding for the Euro 202 draw, which takes place in Dublin on 2 December.

The FAI announced Martin O'Neill's departure following a meeting with O'Neill in the UK on Tuesday night. John Delaney has promised a prompt process to find his replacement - possibly before that 2 December draw at the Convention Centre.
