Sadlier: Time for O'Neill and Keane to go

RTÉ Soccer analyst Richie Sadlier believes Martin O'Neill and Roy Keane are not the right people to lead the Republic of Ireland for the Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.

After a miserable run of one win in 10 matches that included a series of below par performances and no goals in the last four outings, the former international has called for the FAI to take action.

He feels that only the financial outlay of removing O’Neill and Keane should hold back any plan to change.

Sadlier described last night’s display against Denmark as "rock bottom stuff" and added there was "virtually nothing" in signs of improvement.

Asked if it was his belief that O’Neill and Keane's time is up, he said: "That is absolutely my opinion. I would be very firm in that opinion. Things went very, very badly wrong in the play-off against Denmark, and things can go wrong in any game, but then you're looking for signs of what has changed.

"Where is the upturn, why did it happen and what role have Martin and Roy to play in that? There has been no upturn, steady progress or signs of improvement at all in terms of the performances or the results.

"We didn't have a shot on target last night and there is no balance in trying to defend resolutely and being an attacking threat. It is time for a change.

"At the end of every managerial reign, you can look at Steve Staunton, Giovanni Trapattoni, there comes a point when the relationship between a group of players and a manager comes to an end. It's nothing personal, it just happens.

"It happens repeatedly at club and international level and it has done for decades. We've arrived at that point now. The way the manager approaches the job isn't getting a great deal out of the players."

Sadlier was not surprised that O’Neill claimed Ireland were "making progress" and that "commitment was absolutely excellent" in his post-match comments last night.

However, it is the view of the RTÉ pundit that it is not a popular opinion.

"I expected that from him. I think he was going to stress the things that went well. He is in the game long enough to know there is a lot of people questioning how he does the job, how the team plays, some of his selection policies and his managerial approach.

"I don't think anyone is buying it any more. Very few people I have spoken to including supporters, former players and other managers are talking about Martin O'Neill as someone who has what it takes to get more out of this current group of players.

"Last night was a culmination of everything we know about how Martin approaches the job.

"Keep Martin and Roy in charge and we will continue to get performances like that.

"If you don't make any kind of change, nothing will change."

The potential issue facing the FAI is the management team have signed lucrative contracts and if they do take a view that a different approach is needed, then it will have a big financial cost to them.

Sadlier thinks that will result in the FAI standing by the duo.

He added: "Martin and Roy are too expensive to be sacked.

"That is just the reality. So I think we're going to have to get used to them being in the job.

"I don't know what will change while they stay there. He is a manager that gives very little public indication in his comments that he believes there is anything he needs to do differently or that he could do better

"He doesn't take a huge amount of responsibility for things that don't go well in this Irish job. I can't see things changing very quickly."
