Darren Randolph 6
Took a fatal step before Harry Wilson's wickedly curled free-kick and one could also question position of wall. Apart from that he dealt with anything that came his way, including an acrobatic late foot save from George Thomas. A couple of wobbly clearances but for the most part another solid display from Ireland's number one.
Matt Doherty 6
Not as pinned back as he was against Denmark, getting forward early and the Wolves man earned a corner with persistence at the endline. Nice intricate play in second half allowed Hendrick scoop the ball across the goal. He was a feature in late attacks but the end result was not forthcoming.
Richard Keogh 5
Captain played an early aimless ball over sideline, looked no more comfortable as part of a back three than the men alongside him.
Shane Duffy 6
Brighton defender hesitant when closed down by Tom Lawrence and lucky referee saw a handball that few others did. Had a chance from corner kick but his header was straight at Hennessey. He and his defensive team-mates were swamped in the final quarter. Late shot in anger a sign of frustration - not the right call for a team chasing a goal.
Kevin Long 5
The Burnley defender was booked in the 17th minute, which made for an awkward evening up against Tyler Roberts and Harry Wilson. Sacrificed with 16 minutes to go as Martin O'Neill went for broke.
James McClean 6
Late chance to earn a vital point but his shot was weak. His usual energetic stuff early on and earned final warning in 14th minute, before eventually picking up the yellow that rules him out of next month's trip to Aarhus to play Denmark. If somewhat uncertain on positioning in unfamiliar wing-back position he was diligent when dispossessing an attacking David Brooks at one point and involved in move down the left in 40th minute that ended with Robinson's blocked shot. Never stopped trying, but that is not enough for this team anymore.
Harry Arter 5
Improved delivery from deadballs and snapped into tackles as per usual and got booked in 38th minute, as per usual. Dropped too deep for the ball to really impact on the play going forward. Lucky not to see red for sliding tackle on Connor Roberts on 58 minutes - the foul that lead to the goal.
Cyrus Christie 5
Early chance when he robbed Matthew Smith of possession but he rushed the shot and Wayne Hennessey was able to save. A bright start faded to anonymity in the second half. Looked like a full-back being played out of position.
Jeff Hendrick 6
Had best chance of second half after Ireland went behind but after jinking run he shot straight at Hennessey. Started with intent but was bypassed in second quarter as Ireland's passing game quickly dissipated. Still made efforts to play the ball forward in a difficult second half. Looked more comfortable in more advanced position.
Callum Robinson 7
Couple of positive early touches and grew into the game to become Ireland's chief attacking fulcrum. Showed lovely touches and injected pace whenever he had possession. Unlucky to see his shot blocked by Matt Smith at the end of a great move. Unless injured hard to fathom why he was replaced by Seanie Maguire on hour mark.
Aiden O’Brien 7
Lots of enthusiasm early on, closing down Wales defenders and looking to play quick one-twos. Involved in best move of first half when linking up with Robinson. Perhaps lack of game time told as he faded before substitution. Not that playing up front in this team is an easy job, whatever your fitness levels.
SUBSTITUTES
Shane Long 6 (O'Brien 56)
Hit woodwork when already offside and was a very lively influence. Picked up a booking as he threw himself into matters in attempt to rescue the game.
Seanie Maguire 5 (Robinson 60)
One diagonal run got people excited and then frustrated as he was eventually dispossessed. All three strikers who entered in second half were starved of support. Good cross-goal header provided Hogan with a chance.
Scott Hogan 5 (K Long 74)
Had a chance but headed straight at Hennessey, like so many of his team-mates before him.
