Sligo Rovers have confirmed they will not be renewing the contract of manager Gerard Lyttle for next season.

Lyttle was appointed in April of last year and kept the club in the Premier Division on the final day of the campaign, but this year has been another disappointing one for the Bit O' Red.

They have avoided relegation but accumulated just 11 wins in 33 matches so far and exited the FAI Cup in the first round against First Division outfit Longford Town.

Last Saturday's 2-0 defeat to Motherwell Colts in the IRN-BRU Cup appears to have sealed Lyttle's fate.

In a statement released by the club this evening, chairman Martin Heraghty confirmed there will be a new manager in charge at The Showgrounds next season.

Heraghty said: "The club would like to place on record our thanks to Gerard for his professionalism, dedication and commitment in his time at the club.

"In particular we wish to acknowledge the number of young players that made their first appearances for Sligo Rovers under Gerard’s management.

"Their progress and development is testament to his hard work. We would like to wish Gerard every success in the future."

The club will make an announcement on an interim manager for the final 10 days of the season shortly.

Reports today have linked Liam Buckley with the position following his exit from St Patrick's Athletic last month.

Rovers have refused to comment when asked about the speculation.
