Footage has emerged of an apparent training ground disagreement between Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and Paul Pogba, just one day after Pogba was stripped of the vice-captaincy at the club.
Pogba was absent from United’s Carabao Cup defeat on penalties to Derby County last night, watching the game from the stands as Mourinho rotated his squad for a game they were expected to win.
However the French international was in the headlines earlier on Tuesday after reports claimed that he had been told that he would ‘never captain the club again’ by Mourinho.
The United manager appeared to confirm those reports in his post-match interview when he admitted that he had stripped Pogba of his role as vice-captain and the club.
"The only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain any more but no fall-out, no problems at all," Mouriho said in the aftermath of the defeat to Derby
"The same person that decides that Paul is not the second captain anymore is the same person who decides that Paul was the second captain. Myself. I am the manager, I can make these decisions."
Mourinho’s decision to remove Pogba as vice-captain came in the wake of what was construed by many as his criticism of United’s tactics when he complained that the Red Devils are too defensive at home and should be set-up to attack.
The relationship between the two now seems to be further strained after Sky Sports broadcast footage of Pogba joining training with his team-mates this morning, including a seemingly terse exchange between the pair.
The 25-year-old shook hands with coach Michael Carrick and another United employee, before looking taken aback by something Mourinho said.
Pogba was then seen having an apparently exasperated discussion with the manager.
