Declan Rice savours day of redemption on Merseyside

Declan Rice (L): "It was a really good moment for all of us."

Declan Rice said he "really, really enjoyed" his day of redemption on Merseyside, a month after suffering one of the most difficult days of his career.

The 19-year-old was taken off at half-time during West Ham's 4-0 hammering at Anfield against Liverpool having been overwhelmed in a holding midfield role by the rampant hosts.

Rice was left out of the side for a spell after that but he returned, and impressed, in the Carabao Cup win at AFC Wimbledon.

On Sunday he sat in a three-man central midfield that snuffed out Everton's threat and oozed composure and confidence. Rice was singled out for plenty of praise after the Hammers' 3-1 win and shared his delight afterwards.

"I really, really enjoyed it," he told the West Ham website.

"Obviously the first week against Liverpool was tough for me and I knew in myself that I had to improve. We’d worked on the tactics all week with me in there with Pedro [Obiang] and Nobes [Mark Noble] and it paid off.

"It was a really good moment for all of us.

"It’s good that I can play in two positions, as a centre-back or as a holding midfielder, as I just want to get minutes and get games. Like you saw in the second half, I can take control of a game and start passing it left and right and helping out with the defensive bits with Issa [Diop] and Fab [Balbuena], who I thought were excellent.

"I thought it was a collective great team performance today, so hopefully we can keep it going."

Rice's international future remains up in the air. He opted out of the Republic of Ireland panel for the Nations League clash with Wales and England are believed to be interested in luring them into their set-up.

England assistant boss Steve Holland was at Goodison Park yesterday and will surely have been impressed with what he saw.

Rice was also singled out for praise om Match of the Day 2, with former Toffees midifielder Leon Osman commenting:  "The midfield three really did work together. Declan Rice in particular, for a young man of 19, he really did dictate how the middle of the park went. He was good in possession.

"As I said, for a young man of 19 to dictate the middle of the park like he did... was terrific."
