Newcastle defender Paul Dummett has returned to the Wales squad after ending his international exile.

Dummett told previous Wales manager Chris Coleman in May 2017 that he wanted to focus on his club career after missing out on the Euro 2016 squad and he re-iterated that message to current boss Ryan Giggs at the start of this year.

But 26-year-old Dummett, who has won two caps, said earlier this month that he was keen to play for Wales again and Giggs has named him in his squad for the UEFA League of Nations games against the Republic of Ireland (6 September) and Denmark next month.

Dummett played in friendlies against the Netherlands in 2014 and 2015 but has not appeared for the Dragons since.

Skipper Ashley Williams has also been named in the 25-man squad despite problems at club level, which has seen the 34-year-old defender sent off on two of his last three starts.

Chelsea defender Ethan Ampadu and Leeds striker Tyler Roberts are both included.

One man who won't be taking part is Hal Robson-Kanu, who has announced his international retirement. The 29-year-old West Brom forward scored five goals in 44 appearances, two of which came against Slovakia and Belgium at Euro 2016.

"I spoke to him yesterday and it was a difficult decision for him," Giggs said.

"He's had a difficult six months, with the birth of his baby, and he wants to focus on his family and his club career.

"He's an icon in Welsh football with the goal he scored against Belgium and I wish him all the best."

Former Manchester United favourite Giggs was asked about the current problems at his former club.

United's 3-0 home defeat to Tottenham on Monday has put manager Jose Mourinho under intense scrutiny.

"I was there on Monday as a United fan," Giggs said. "It's time for the fans to stick together, get behind the club, team and manager.

"It's a tough time but we've had tough times before and got through it."
