West Ham United co-chairman David Gold has raised the prospect of Declan Rice captaining England after his decision to take time to decide his international future.
The Hammers player will sit out the Nations League game with Wales as he decides whether to represent England or the Republic of Ireland.
The Under-21 star had indicated his future was in a green shirt until the dramatic development yesterday. He has already won three senior caps but not in a competitive game.
Gold said: "My hope all along has been that Declan first becomes an England player and then follows in the footsteps of the great Bobby Moore by becoming the captain of England."
"Born in England made in West Ham United."
Martin O’Neill said yesterday: "I’ve spoken to him, I’ve spoke to the family.
"His father is an absolute gentleman, he’s very keen for him to play for us too but the lad just needs a little bit more time."
