Darron Gibson has signed a short-term deal with Championship outfit Wigan Athletic.
The 30-year-old Derryman left Sunderland in March having initially been suspended by the club after he was charged with drink driving.
Gibson was initially arrested after several vehicles were damaged close to the club's Academy of Light training ground on March 17 as his team-mates prepared for their home league clash with Preston.
He had joined the Black Cats in January 2017 and made the last of his 27 league appearances for the club in a New Year's Day defeat to Barnsley.
The 27-time capped Republic of Ireland international now gets a fresh start with the Latics, who were promoted from League One last season under former Sligo Rovers boss Paul Cook.
"Darron is a talented footballer, who has played at the highest level and is a good addition to our squad," Cook told the club website.
They start the new season at home to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
