Liverpool will sign Naby Keita on Sunday as the long-awaited move finally comes to fruition.

The midfielder will formally become a Reds player on Sunday after a deal was reached with RB Leipzig for his services in August 2017.

Keita, who has signed a long-term contract with Liverpool, will begin pre-season training on Monday at Melwood.

He said: "When you see how they performed last season it makes me want to do the same and to be a part of this team. I would like to be able to achieve a similar kind of season with them next season – but even better.

"I chose Liverpool because it is a team I watched often - and I also spoke a lot about it with Sadio [Mane]. He told me a lot about the team and the club.

"I also spoke with the coach, who told me about the project for the team and that motivated me to be here."

The 23-year-old moves to Anfield after two seasons with Leipzig, during which he scored 17 goals in 71 appearances for the Bundesliga side.

Keita has been allocated the number eight shirt next season - and he was presented with it by the previous incumbent Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard wore the jersey for 11 years at Anfield, famously lifting the Champions League trophy in it in 2005, and Keita is the first player to take it since the former midfielder's departure for Los Angeles Galaxy in 2014.

Keita, who starts pre-season training on Monday, travelled to Liverpool's Melwood training ground last August after a deal with RB Leipzig was agreed and, while he was there, Gerrard, then the club's under-18s coach, handed him his shirt.

"It was an incredible day for me. He gave me the number eight jersey. When it happened, it was a surprise and I didn't expect it," Keita told LFCTV.

"When he came in, I looked and him and said 'Wow' because he is a legend. He is somebody who always showed respect, who gave his all on the pitch, somebody who is loved here."
