Republic of Ireland midfielder David Meyler has signed for Reading following his departure from Hull at the end of last season.

The Championship club has announced that Meyler has signed on an initial two-year contract with the option of a third year included in the deal.

Meyler's contract with Hull expires at the end of the season after spending five-and-a-half years at the club, although manager Nigel Adkins has admitted that he wanted the Corkman to stay on.

The 29-year-old enjoyed two promotions with Hull and also picked up an FA Cup runners up medal during his time at the club.

He now joins fellow Ireland teammate Paul McShane and Ireland U21 midfielder Liam Kelly at Reading. John O'Shea has also been linked with a move to Berkshire. The paperwork for his new move will be completed upon the conclusion of his contract at Hull City at the end of this month.

Meyler tweeted his joy after signing with the Championship side, while Reading manager Paul Clement expressed his excitement about his new recruit.

"I am very happy to welcome David to the club as our second signing of the summer. He comes here with a lot of experience at this level but also the level above and with his ability and his leadership qualities, David is going to add a lot to our squad.

"At the end of last season, I felt it was important to bring in a player of David’s profile. And when I met with him, I got a real sense of his ambition to play at the highest level again. And, together, we’ll be fighting to push this club forward."

Reading suffered a difficult season last year and sacked ex-Manchester United defender Japp Stam as manager after a run of one win in 18 league games.
