Former Ireland international Michael Doyle has captained Coventry City to promotion after they won their Sky Bet League One play-off against Exeter 3-1 at Wembley.

The Sky Blues sealed an immediate return to the third tier courtesy of second-half goals from Jordan Willis, Jordan Shipley and Jack Grimmer.

Substitute Kyle Edwards pulled one back late on but Exeter were left to reflect on once again falling just short, having lost to Blackpool in last season's play-off final.

Doyle, playing at Coventry for his second spell after rejoining them at the start of the season from Portsmouth, was heavily involved throughout and helped to create the crucial opening goal.

His incisive pass to Willis was finished off with aplomb and it was that strike that set the Skyblues on their way to victory.

Doyle was perhaps fortunate to be on the pitch at that stage however as first half replays appeared to show him connecting with an elbow on Exeter’s Jake Taylor.
