Waterford FC have confirmed the club's first team manager Alan Reynolds was the victim of a vicious assault overnight.

Reynolds was jumped on, beaten and kicked by possibly two men at around 1am in Tramore.

It is understood the Waterford manager was attacked from behind.

He is recovering in hospital with injuries to his face and body and has a suspected broken leg.

Waterford said in a statement this evening: "Waterford FC can confirm that manager Alan Reynolds is recovering in hospital following an unprovoked assault last night. The club will be making no further comment on the matter."

Gardai are checking CCTV footage and are appealing for witnesses.

There have been no arrests so far.
