Meath man Seán Cox remains in a critical condition in hospital, according to Merseyside police.

The Liverpool supporter was assaulted before his team’s Champions League first-leg semi-final against Roma in an unprovoked attack.

Mr Cox subsequently required surgery for bleeding on the brain and has been receiving treatment at the Walton Centre in Liverpool.

Two Italian men have since been charged over the incident and are being remanded until a court appearance at Liverpool Crown Court on Thursday 24 May.

Filippo Lombardi (20) has been charged with violent disorder and wounding/inflicting grievous bodily harm while Daniele Sciusco (29) faces a violent disorder charge.

A gofundme page set up by an Irish Liverpool supporters group has raised over €87,500 for Mr Cox and his family while both clubs have demonstrated their support for the Irishman.

Police in the UK have appealed for any for CCTV and camera phone footage of the attack.
