Dani Alves will not play for Brazil at the World Cup after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage.

The 35-year-old Paris St Germain full-back limped out of his side's Coupe de France final victory over Les Herbiers after injuring his knee.

The Brazilian Football Confederation tweeted on Friday: "Tests have ruled that it is impossible to call up Dani Alves for the World Cup. We hope the athlete is ready to start his recovery so he can bring his technique and leadership back to the national squad as soon as possible."

A statement posted on selecao.cbf.com.br said Alves would need surgery, following Brazilian team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar's medical examination of the player in Paris.

Alves, who has 107 Brazil caps, joined PSG on a free transfer last July following a season with Juventus. He had been linked with Manchester City, having worked with manager Pep Guardiola previously at Barcelona.
