Cawley fears for Sligo after loss to Bohemians

Gerard Lyttle's side are in eighth place as things stand

Soccer Republic analyst Alan Cawley feels Sligo Rovers are in "serious, serious trouble" following their loss to Bohemians on Saturday in The Showgrounds.

The Bit O’ Red slumped to an eighth defeat in 15 league matches this season against Bohs, conceding twice to Danny Grant despite having plenty of possession in the first hour of the game.

Cawley has highlighted Sligo’s squad additions under manager Gerard Lyttle prior to the start of the campaign as a major contributor to their poor season so far.

He told Soccer Republic Extra:  "I was so disappointed with Sligo Rovers on Saturday. From watching them they lack some serious quality. The recruitment has been nowhere near good enough in the off-season.

"Obviously Gerard did very well last season, coming in and keeping them in the division. That would have been the mission he was given when brought into the club.

"This year he deserved the chance of having a go at it. It was up to him to bring in his own players and put his stamp on in, which he did. They're really lacking quality.

"That is epitomised by the fact their two best players on the night were two young players from Sligo, 18-year-old John Mahon and Jack Keaney aged 19 as well. They’ve both come up from the Under-19s.

"That tells you all about the players that are there.  Their home form is dreadful, losing six out of nine games. Last year it was the home form that kept them in the division, losing two all season.

"The fans are starting to become a little bit disillusioned. In all the years I’ve been watching Sligo Rovers, it was as bad a performance as I’ve seen. It was dreadful.

"I think Sligo are in serious, serious trouble. The fact Bray have picked up adds to it now."

Cawley did offer one hope for Sligo, singling out Mahon who only made his league debut last month.

"John Mahon is one to watch out for. It was my first time to see him play. I had heard a lot of reports about him but he was really, really good. He’s definitely one to keep an eye on."
