Dundalk have confirmed that their captain Stephen O'Donnell has suffered a broken leg during last night's loss against Waterford FC.
O'Donnell was stretchered off before half-time in Dundalk's 2-1 defeat in the RSC. The player was taken to hospital before full-time last night.
The club confirmed this afternoon that the midfielder had broken his tibia. He will undergo surgery over the weekend.
Manager Stephen Kenny told the club's website that it was too early to say how long the player would be out of action.
"Stephen has a broken leg. The bottom line is that he broke his tibia. He will be having surgery over the weekend. We'll see from there.
"He heard a crack when it happened. It is too early to estimate how long he will be out for. We will know more after the surgery. "

It is O'Donnell's second serious injury during his time at the club. In April 2014, he tore his cruciate ligament in a game against Shamrock Rovers but returned in time to help Dundalk seal the title on the last day of the season.
The 32-year old Galway man has won five League of Ireland titles altogether and featured in the Europa League group stages for both Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk.
